Episode 40. Teaching Young Children with Visual Impairments in a Preschool Setting with Katie Armstrong
We don’t always know what will happen in years to come. We don’t usually expect ourselves to be experts in our specialised field in the future. But for me and my friend, Katie, we both thought that we would make a difference in our field one day.
In this week’s podcast, we get to talk with my college best friend, Katie Armstrong. She is a certified TVI and O&M who specializes in early childhood for children with visual impairments and is passionate about little people. She knew from when she was a child that she was going to work in specialized education and having stumbled across the visual impairments program during her freshman year, she fell in love with the idea of teaching children who are visually impaired.
Running a preschool classroom for children with visual impairments may seem intimidating. For Katie, she sees it as a playground where children learn and play at the same time. You’ll get to hear from her experience how Katie juggles between the needs of different kids while also collaborating with the students’ parents virtually. You’ll also get to know how she learned from trials and errors to get to where she is today.
While her career path seems super niche, she has so much to talk about and I’m sure that you’ll get hooked listening to what she has to say. Not to mention, what she has to say about taking a step forward may just be what you need.
