Episode 10: How not feeling prepared to teach O&M to students with multiple impairments can lead to triumph.

Lack of confidence can sometimes hold us back from doing things that we want to do, especially if it means stepping out of your comfort zone. It’s human nature to have mixed feelings about new challenges. There’s the excitement to learn and then we also have the fear of not measuring up.

In this episode, we had a lovely time chatting with Anna Peskin. She is one of the best experts on teaching Orientation and Mobility to children with multiple impairments.

We talked about how she started her journey working with kids with disabilities. She was so open and honest about the time when she was afraid to pick up assignments dealing with these kids because she had no idea what she would be getting herself into, which is totally relatable if you ask me! She also shared her go-to evaluation tool put out by Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. It offers a super thorough evaluation which takes in a lot in consideration, most of all it’s a free tool! They call it VISSIT or Visual Impairment Scale of Service Intensity of Texas, just click the link to learn more about it.

It’s a delight to hear her experience of transformation from being scared and unsure, to seeing herself doing and loving it. Now, she is a champion of kids with multiple disabilities and has trained herself to see the potential in everyone. This is definitely a success story of triumph over fear.

She will be doing a presentation in the 2020 International Orientation and Mobility Online Symposium, so grab the chance to hear her live.

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.
— Nelson Mandela
