3 Key Ways Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments Can Make 2024-2025 the Best School Year Yet!
Welcome to Season Seven of A Step Forward! I’m thrilled to kick off this new chapter and share the exciting developments we have in store. As many of you know, there’s been a lot of behind-the-scenes activity since our last episode, and I’m eager to catch you up on all the changes and new directions we’re taking. This season is all about fresh perspectives, engaging content, and staying connected with you in more dynamic ways.
Reflecting on the Break
If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been since around March or April, let me fill you in. I took a hiatus from podcasting to reflect on how we can better serve you. During this time, I realized that our podcast was functioning more as a “vitamin” rather than a “pain pill”—meaning it was valuable but not always immediately addressing the urgent needs you might have. This realization sparked a desire to pivot our approach, making our content more accessible and directly relevant to your needs.
One significant change we’re making is integrating YouTube into our offerings. By moving our podcast to a video format, we aim to provide more immediate, bite-sized pieces of content that you can access anytime. This shift allows us to create shorter clips and highlight key insights without the commitment of a full-length episode. It’s about making sure you can get the information you need when you need it, without having to wait for a longer podcast.
A Look Back at Recent Changes
At the end of the last school year, I found myself deeply immersed in the IEP evaluation process, which was both overwhelming and enlightening. It was a period of intense reflection and decision-making. I faced a choice: continue down the same path, risking burnout, or pivot to something that reignited my passion. I chose to pivot.
This decision was compounded by the departure of our podcast editor, who moved on to new opportunities. While it was a loss for us, it also created a natural moment for a reset. This gave me the chance to reevaluate how we deliver content and how I want to engage with you. I decided to explore a more feminine energy in my work, focusing on creativity and connection.
During this transitional period, I also embraced new interests and experiences. I attended a Latin dance conference, which was an incredible opportunity for me to immerse myself in intensive learning and practice. As someone who loves Latin dancing, this conference was not just a hobby but a way to reinvigorate my passion and creativity. The concentrated environment of the conference allowed me to elevate my skills and reminded me of the importance of pursuing our passions fully.
The Summer Break: Family, Fun, and Renewal
This summer was a blend of personal joy and professional rejuvenation. I had the opportunity to take my children and my mom to Disney World and Legoland. It was a magical experience, filled with laughter and nostalgia. Sharing these moments with my family was deeply fulfilling and provided a much-needed break from the daily grind.
Before this vacation, I participated in the Latin dance conference, which was both intense and rewarding. The conference allowed me to delve deeply into my passion for Latin dance, enhancing my skills and connecting with others who share my enthusiasm. This experience highlighted the value of focused, high-quality instruction and reminded me of the importance of pursuing what excites us.

Predictions for the Upcoming Year
As we move into this new season, I want to share some predictions and insights about the evolving landscape of education and our profession:
1. The State of Education
Education is in a state of flux, and the pandemic has intensified existing challenges. There’s a noticeable divide between those who are disillusioned and those who are actively seeking solutions. It’s crucial to choose which side you want to be on. Instead of focusing on what’s wrong, focus on how you can be part of the solution. Engage actively, seek out innovative approaches, and contribute to positive change.
2. Emerging Leadership and Expertise
With the decline of old systems, new leadership and expertise are emerging. This shift presents an opportunity for fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Be prepared to embrace and contribute to this evolution. New leaders will bring new ideas and solutions, and it’s essential to stay informed and adaptable.
3. Technological Advancements
Technology continues to advance rapidly, and while it’s fascinating, it also presents challenges in our teaching practices. Staying updated on new apps and tools is important, but it’s equally crucial to ensure that technology enhances rather than complicates our teaching methods. Balance is key to leveraging technology effectively.
4. Community Building
The importance of community in our profession cannot be overstated. Many of us experience isolation, which can impact our mental health. Building and nurturing a supportive network of colleagues who understand the unique challenges we face can be incredibly beneficial. Don’t underestimate the power of community in providing support and fostering growth.
Strategies for a Successful Year
Even if we don’t connect again soon, here are some strategies to ensure this year is your best yet:
1. Time Management
Time management is crucial for achieving your goals and preventing burnout. Just as you budget your money, you should budget your time. Prioritize tasks and focus on what truly matters. Effective time management will help you stay organized and productive.
2. Join the Conversation
Engage actively in conversations within your field. Whether through volunteering, participating in planning committees, or simply sharing your ideas, contributing to the dialogue is essential. Don’t let imposter syndrome hold you back. Remember, you’re joining a conversation that’s already in progress.
3. Team Alignment
Ensure that your teaching teams are aligned and cohesive. Provide them with the necessary support and training to effectively meet the needs of learners. Consider participating in or organizing programs to enhance team collaboration and effectiveness.
4. Crucial Conversations
Mastering the art of crucial conversations is vital. Clear and honest communication is essential in our profession. Books like *Crucial Conversations* and *Dare to Lead* offer valuable frameworks for effective dialogue and leadership. Embrace these tools to enhance your communication skills.
